LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) - They're often on the front lines, helping those who are in need, who have just been through a major disaster.
This week the American Red Cross found out they were on the other side of the helping hand.
Each year hundreds of families are affected by disaster here in Kentucky.
Whether its a flood or fire destroying their home, the Bluegrass Chapter of the American Red Cross steps in to help with accommodations.
They are one of several charity organizations receiving donations from the ticket proceeds from next Monday's Alumni game; tickets for which have sold between $6 and $251 a piece.
"It's just a tremendous opportunity for us and for these families. Everybody that's involved in this game can feel great. The next time they hear about a house fire on WKYT, and the Red Cross is on the scene, they'll know that they helped us be there to provide that family some comfort and aid in their time of need," said Winn Stephens with the Bluegrass Chapter of the American Red Cross.
Stephens says the Red Cross was able to match the proceeds from the ticket sales from the Alumni Game, bringing the total of donations to 50 thousand dollars.
The alumni game raised $350 thousand dollars last year.
Coach John Calipari said on his website he hopes to at least double that this year.
