Church proposes ban on interracial couples

A couple traveling home to Pike County for the holiday weekend, got a cold reception at the family church after announcing their engagement. Stella Harville, who grew up going to Gulnare Freewill Baptist Church, introduced the congregation to her fiance, Ticha Chikuni.

"He has such a huge faith. He has just one of the kindest hearts," says Harville.

The way Harville tells the story, some of the congregation didn't see his heart, they stopped at the color of his skin. She says Sunday, they voted on a rule a former pastor and current member of the church proposed, stating members of interracial marriages will not be used in worship services and other church functions.

"It's just a travesty. Especially of Christianity, that this church would just think this way," says Harville, "people who have this backward way of thinking, they should know that their racist actions should not and will not be tolerated."

The church pastor did not want to comment on camera. The church member that proposed the recommendation did not answer phone calls.

The couple, who met at Georgetown College, are planning a July wedding in Midway, Ky.
