Cold Water Challenge continues to go viral and spread in Lexington

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) - The Cold Water Challenge has spread throughout fire departments across the country. And on Monday night, 100 people took the plunge in Lexington.

The charity event benefited Joe Vissing, a Lexington firefighter and a former UK Emergency Department paramedic, who was recently diagnosed with stage IV melanoma cancer.

Around 100 UK Healthcare employees participated in the challenge, making them the largest group to complete this type of challenge. They raised about $1,000 which is also the largest amount contributed to date.

Several people in the community participated in order to give back to the firefighter. It's an event that has gone viral.

"I've already accepted the challenge once and got wet, but we just wanted to up the ante to try to raise a thousand dollars tonight for Joe's cancer fund," said Jamie Alcorn, an organizer and participant. "I don't mind to get wet for that at all!"

The Lexington Fire Department is raising the money in order to help Vissing pay medical bills.
