PIKEVILLE, Ky. (WYMT) - More than one dozen employees at a Pikeville company lost their jobs this week.
Officials with Lightyear Network Solutions said they are consolidating offices in Louisville and Pikeville to save money.
Some former employees said they did not expect the layoffs.
Justin Prater said he knew something was going on as soon as he got to work at Lightyear Network Solutions Monday morning.
"Friday we all went to work, and I know we came in Monday unexpected we saw some people that we normally don't see," he said.
He said what he heard next came as a complete surprise.
"Just one by one they just called us in, just 'your position's been eliminated,' and they just sent us home," said Prater.
He said he was one of 17 Lightyear employees who were told they no longer had jobs. Many of the employees said they are uncertain about their future.
"It's scary. It's really scary to lose your job you know, and next week I'd have been here six years and I planned on being there for the long haul," said former employee Judy Stump.
Company officials could not speak on camera but said in a written statement the layoffs are due to "challenging business conditions, especially in Appalachia," and that they "regret the need to reduce employment."
Lightyear officials said the layoffs are permanent.
