Deputy pulls man from burning Wayne Co. home

MONTICELLO, Ky. (WKYT) - Jason Phillips has seen a lot as a veteran lawman but nothing like what he witnessed during his patrol on Ky. 833 Monday night.

“I drove by the house and saw flames, flames coming out these two windows, so I pulled into the yard,” said the Wayne County second shift deputy.

He was met by Irene Kinnett, who asked him to help her son, who was still inside, trying to put the fire out himself.

“I went inside, quite a little ways in..had to come back out..get some more air,” he said.

His second time in he found the man laying in the kitchen floor.

“I had to get in low, to see him in the floor, once I saw him I was just trying to get out,” he said.

There was smoke everywhere and it was hard to breathe.

“I grabbed him by the arms, grabbed him and dragged him into the yard,” said Deputy Phillips.

And deputy Phillips has more than 20 years of law enforcement experience. He says he loves his job because he never knows what each day is going to bring.

One day upholding the law…the next saving a life.

“If somebody said there was someone in there, I would go in and get whoever it was,” said Phillips who added he did not know the victims.

There’s no word yet on the cause of the fire but it is under investigation.
