LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) - A Lexington police officer is recovering after being injured while helping a crash victim.
A driver struck another vehicle on a stretch of the outer loop between Harrodsburg Road and Versailles Road just before 5:30 a.m. The impact caused the other vehicle to flip.
Police say officer Darrell Jones, a fifteen year veteran with the Lexington Metro Police Department, was first on the scene. They say he was helping a young woman trapped in her car when bystanders pulled over to help.
Police say when they approached the flipped vehicle, they accidentally moved the car causing the door to fling shut, smacking officer Jones in the head.
"They were trying to do the right thing," explains Lt. Chris Van Brackel with the Lexington Police Department, "one of them grabbed a hold of the car and it was just enough to make it shut. He ended up with a few stitches over his eye from the door coming shut on him."
Police say the victim was taken to UK hospital with minor injuries.
The other driver, who police identify as 35 year-old Christian Chavez Sequeiros, was charged with DUI with aggravating circumstances.
Traffic was backed up for a short time on the outer loop of New Circle while the vehicles were towed away from the scene.
