RICHMOND, Ky. (WKYT) - Traffic in Richmond is expected to be heavier than normal this weekend with Eastern Kentucky University commencement ceremonies and a visit by The First Lady Michelle Obama Saturday evening, not to mention that it's Mother's day weekend.
The EKU Police Department recommends that drivers look for alternative routes if they're making their way to campus for the evening commencements on Saturday instead of trying to make their way down 87.
They say traffic for the morning commencements was normal and they didn't receive any complaints from attendees. But they expect it to be a different story come Saturday evening when the crowds are expected to be a lot bigger.
Campus Police suggest drivers come down the new Robert Martin Bypass, which will bring you down to the Eastern bypass where you can come into campus by the Roy Kidd Stadium.
Or another alternate route would be to take exit 90 down West Main Street into town and turn onto Lancaster Avenue which will pull you right up to the main entrance to campus.
If you are travelling down 87, they suggest that you give yourself extra time, as they expect traffic to be heaviest coming in from that way.
