EKU students make YouTube video for first lady

RICHMOND, Ky. - (WKYT) - First Lady Michelle Obama won't be on the Eastern Kentucky University campus until Saturday but some students there are already making her feel welcome.

A group of EKU upperclassmen created a video for the first lady ahead of her commencement address.

“We were talking one day about what we could do to welcome the first lady to the university,” said Nicholas Brock, a member of the EKU Gurus.

It didn't take long until they decided to turn those ideas into a YouTube video.

“I wrote a script that incorporated the Gurus and the veterans on campus to tell the first lady how honored we are to have her here,” Brock told us on Wednesday.

The EKU Gurus were thrilled when their YouTube video began gaining popularity, but on Friday, the Gurus really got the shock of their lives when they learned that the first lady hadn't only seen the video-- she'd also shared it on social media.

“I was ecstatic. Mandy called me screaming and told me the first lady tweeted us and I couldn’t believe she had actually seen it,” Brock said.

In just a few short days, the Gurus hope to thank the first lady in person.

The first lady will speak at the Alumni Coliseum this Saturday and EKU employees say the last time that someone of this stature spoke at graduation was Lyndon Johnson in the 1960s.

“To have her come to EKU is just fantastic and all of the students are extremely excited. We’re just honored to have her come here to our graduation and it’s amazing. It’s a once in a life time opportunity,” said Mandy Eppley, the coordinator of the EKU Gurus.

Students and staff say the fact that their small school and their self-made YouTube video are receiving national recognition shows them that with hard work--anything can happen.

The EKU Gurus consist of 25 upperclassmen who are trained in student services and academic areas, allowing them to help other students while at EKU.
