KEAVY, Ky. (WKYT) - Atwood and Norma Sizemore were headed down Rachel Road en route to their son’s home, but their trip was cut short by downed tree Monday. They turned around and suddenly another tree came down right on top of their car.
“Well, it’s just real scary to think about you’re driving along and a tree falls and hits you,” said Opal Sizemore, the Sizemores' sister-in-law.
The tree crushed the passenger side of their Toyota Prius. Atwood was able to climb out with only a cut elbow. His wife was trapped inside.
“They had to cut her out. Cut the door off they said,” she said.
Laurel County emergency officials believe that the damage was caused by straight line winds, not a tornado.
Downed trees were seen all over the area, but emergency officials say remarkably no homes or businesses were damaged. Sizemore’s injuries seemed even minor at first but a closer look revealed some trauma.
“Three vertebrae, maybe two in her back and some ribs broken,” Sizemore said of her sister-in-law’s condition at UK Hospital.
Sizemore also suffered a cut to the head.
“People can pray. I pray that she will be alright, won’t be something that will be on and on,” she said.
