Family supports possible death penalty sentence

Updated: Sat 12:15 AM, Jul 28, 2012

"We have our waves, is that a good way of putting it? One minute we'll be fine, and it doesn't take anything for us to just break down. Driving in the car today, just broke down," said Wendell Roberts, reflecting on the weeks following the murder of his daughter.

Roberts wants justice.
And recently, prosecutors approached him with a sentence they believe will achieve just that.

"He just simply said, what do you think about it," recalled Roberts.

"I do believe, that there are consequences to our actions. And for the shedding of blood, blood will be required," said Roberts, referencing a verse from the book of Genesis.

Roberts, a leader of his Jamestown church, quoted Bible scripture, from Genesis, and Romans, supporting his stance.

"It comes home now to me, it's happened to my family. And I'm taking a stance that many people find controversial. But again I go back, it's what the Bible says," Roberts said.

Roberts said he wanted to be transparent with his congregation on the issue. So he brought it up in a sermon this past Sunday.

"As a Christian, if I'm gonna believe the Bible, I've got to believe all of it. Even the parts that are controversial," said Roberts.

Roberts pointed out he's always held these views, even before his daughter's murder.

We asked him about the progress of a memorial run taking place on August 11th in honor of Sarah.
Roberts tells 27 News First the race has more than one thousand runners signed up, and they've raised more than thirty thousand dollars.
Roberts says all the money raised goes straight into a scholarship fund.
