Firefighter injured while fighting early morning fire

WINCHESTER, Ky. (WKYT) - A first responder is recovering after being injured while fighting and overnight fire.

The fire started on the first floor of a home just before 3am Friday morning on Garner Street off of College Street in Winchester.

Firefighters say a neighbor spotted the fire at an abandoned home and called it in. Crews were able to quickly put out the flames and they say the damage is minimal.

Firefighters say that the fire is suspicious because there weren't any utilities hooked up to the house. Neighbors in the area say they have noticed squatters going in and out of the home at night.

Arson investigators were called to investigate.

Although the fire was minor, officials say a firefighter did suffer a leg injury after he slipped on the wet grass and fell down a small hill.

The firefighter is expected to be fine.
