LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) - On Friday two former Fayette County Sheriff deputies will return to court following a grand jury indictment.
Sgt. Merle McDaniel and Sgt. Bill Beers are accused of stealing confiscated firearms from the sheriff's office evidence locker over a two-year period.
Fayette County Sheriff Kathy Witt announced the charges in early May. Both men have since resigned due to the investigation. Sheriff Witt said more than a dozen guns confiscated by the deputies were unaccounted for.
Guns that were supposed to have been logged and stored into a property and evidence locker. Beers is accused of stealing eight guns this year alone, that Witt said he returned once the investigation began.
McDaniel is accused of taking six guns from two men in 2010, and pawning two of those firearms at Dan's Discount Jewelry & Pawn. Only one of the pawned guns were recovered. The owner of that gun tells WKYT the Fayette County Sheriff's Office gave him a check today to compensate him for his gun that is still missing.
Both Beers & McDaniel have plead not guilty. They will be arraigned on Friday. A third deputy, Major Chris Tudor, whose cited in this case. He is still employee of the sheriff's office, but remains suspended without pay.
