WHITLEY COUNTY, Ky. (WKYT) -- An alert for people in Whitley County Wednesday night as investigators say some people may be showing up at homes pretending to be Medicare or social security workers.
The Whitley County Sheriff's Office says a man claiming to work for medicare asked to meet with a woman at her home in Woodbine.
He later showed up but the woman became suspicious and called police.
Deputies have received similar reports of this happening. They think it could be an attempt at identity theft.
The Whitley County Sheriff's Department says they spoke to a representative of the Federal Trade Commission, which investigates identity theft. They advised no person should relay personal information, such as one's Medicare account number, to unknown persons via phone. They also advised that home visits are usually done by care providers, whom the homeowner would likely know from previous, official encounters, such as social workers or medical personnel.
