Frigid temperatures cause multiple power outages

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) - Kentucky Utilities Company was busy trying to keep up with the number of power outages Friday morning.

There were about 3,600 customers in Versailles who were without power for an extended period of time. Other outages around the Bluegrass began rolling in during the early morning hours.

Power went out at Tates Creek Village on Kirklevington Drive overnight. The outage left about 150 customers who live in the apartment complex without power for about an hour.

The problem with all of the outages is the extremely cold temperatures. It's very dangerous for people to not have access to heat during this arctic weather.

KU officials say they're working to restore all of the outages as quickly as possible, but the cold is keeping them on their toes.

"When we get temperatures that are as severely cold as what we've had, we probably are going to experience some kind of equipment failures and that's been the case," says Cliff Feltham, a spokesperson for Kentucky Utilities. "With the extreme cold, there's just equipment that doesn't want to function like it usually does."

Anyone who experiences an outage should report it as quickly as possible, either through KU's website, or by calling 1-800-981-0600.
