MADISON COUNTY, Ky. (WKYT) - A Salmonella outbreak, linked to cantaloupes, continues to have people across the country on alert.

Eight people in Madison County are now battling Salmonella-related illnesses. Doctors say at least three of those are linked to a strain that tainted cantaloupes in Indiana.

Kelly's Fruit Market in Madison County is taking extra steps to make sure its customers are safe. "We have the finest produce in Madison County," explains Kelly Ratliff, owner of Kelly's Fruit Market. "We know exactly where all of our produce is coming from and we always make sure it's the highest quality."

Ratliff tells us when the notice of the outbreak came out her market pulled all their cantaloupe. "We didn't want to take any chances," explains Ratliff, "we just took all the cantaloupe off the shelf and replaced it with melons from California."

The outbreak so far has affected 21 states, including here in Kentucky. There have been eight confirmed cases in Madison County, according to Christie Green with the Madison County Health Department. "We don't want to scare people away from eating melon," explains Green, "but we would encourage consumers to identify the source of the melons that they are thinking about buying."

Ratliff says "with most of our produce that we have and that we sell I can tell you every single growers name, who grows it where it's grown and a little bit about their family."

According to the Center for Disease Control, most people infected with salmonella develop diarrhea, fever and abdominal crams within 12-72 hours. The illness usually lasts four to seven days -- while most people recover without treatment, some people end up hospitalized and in extreme cases, symptoms can turn fatal.
