Grant to help ease city's firefighter shortage

Lexington's mayor says a federal grant will help the city deal with a shortage of firefighters.

The city will receive a $2.6 million grant. City leaders announced it during a press conference Tuesday morning.

Fire Chief Keith Jackson, Mayor Jim Gray and Congressman Ben Chandler were all on hand for the announcement.

The city can use the money to hire 28 new firefighters. Those will be in addition to the two recruiting classes Lexington has already budgeted for.

While officials hope this will bring the department closer to ending brownouts, they say the brownouts will have to continue until the new firefighters are hired and trained.
