Investigators say a joint effort on the part of off-duty police officers and a truck driver led to the capture of a man, within about five minutes of a bank robbery.

Lexington Police are calling the man taken into custody, just down the street from the Whitaker Bank on Paris Pike, a person of interest in the crime. Our cameras were there when officers put him in the back of a cruiser and took him away to be interviewed.

Investigators tell us they got the call around 3:30pm Monday that someone had robbed the Whitaker Bank. Across the street, at a Food Mart, Matthew Roland had just hooked up his truck to refuel the gas station. He noticed that he was blocking a van, but at the time he says no one was in it. However, the next thing he knew someone had gotten in the van, tried to back out, and hit his truck, so Roland held the man there.

It wasn't until some off-duty police officers showed up that Roland knew anything about a bank robbery, but he says he's glad to have helped with the capture.

We asked the truck driver how long it would usually take to refuel the gas station, and he said about 10 or 15 minutes. That just happened to be the window of time this person of interest was trying to get away.

Police wouldn't say how much was stolen from the bank, but they tell us that person of interest had a large amount of cash on him when they caught him.
