In your face, selfie! 'Science' also tops for 2013

NEW YORK (AP) - Look alive, selfie. There's another word of the year that's not all about you.

Merriam-Webster's word of 2013 is science, based on a 176 percent increase in lookups on its website when compared with last year. Tuesday's announcement follows selfie, the word-of-the-year choice for Oxford University Press, the British publisher of the Oxford dictionaries.

Oxford's word of the year was based on a huge jump in overall usage of the word for those little smartphone self-portraits people are always sharing on social media.

So why science? Merriam-Webster editor at large John Morse says it lurks behind lots of big issues we're dealing with, from global warming to what's in the textbooks of our kids.
