Kentucky governor elected chairman of education group

FRANKFORT, Ky. (AP) - Gov. Steve Beshear has been elected chairman of the 80-member Southern Regional Education Board.

The board says Beshear will work with governors, lawmakers and state education leaders to improve public education student achievement. The term is for one year, and Beshear succeeds Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal.

Beshear was elected during the board's annual meeting in New Orleans last week.

The SREB's website says the nonprofit, nonpartisan organization was created in 1948 by governors and legislators from the South. It is based in Atlanta.
