LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) - A Lexington firefighter will receive the honor of a lifetime this weekend.

First Lt. Shannon Ison is also a member of the Kentucky National Guard, and will receive the Silver Star, the second highest honor a soldier can receive on Sunday.

For ten years, he's been both a Lexington firefighter and paramedic, and a member of the Guard.

Ison will be honored with the award for saving the lives of soldiers whose truck was hit by a roadside bomb.

We caught up with Ison Friday at the Lexington Firefighter's Officer Promotion Ceremony, where he was promoted to a higher rank in the department.

Ison works at the Engine 15 station in Lexington at Shilito Park. He will be deployed overseas again, and this time, he will go with a promotion in the National Guard as well, as a Company Commander.
