A Jessamine County woman is suing her Lexington dentist after she says he dropped a dental screwdriver down her throat during a routine procedure.

An X-ray included in the lawsuit shows the screwdriver lodged in her digestive system. In the lawsuit, Lena David, 71, of Nicholasville says she went to her dentist Dr. W.B. Galbreath last May for work on her dentures, when Dr. Galbreath "lost control of the screwdriver" according to court documents.

And "dropped the screwdriver in Ms. David's mouth, and Ms. David reflexively swallowed it."

The lawsuit goes on to say, Galbreath told David to "expel the tool, by making herself vomit." It goes on to say, Galbreath told David to go next door and have X-rays taken at a chiropractor's office, instead of an emergency room.

The X-ray showed the screwdriver had rested "on the stomach." Documents say Galbreath sent David home, instructing her to eat a "diet high in fiber" and to "Search for the screwdriver following each bowel movement."

When the screwdriver failed to pass normally. David was admitted to St. Joseph's Hospital where doctors had to surgically remove it.

A WKYT crew went to Doctor Galbreath's practice today, but his office is closed on Fridays. Our phone call was not returned.

The lawsuit claims David is suing for pain and suffering, past and future medical expenses and her ability to work.

We caught up with David at her home, but she declined to comment on camera. Her attorney, Edwin Clark, also declined to comment at this time.

According to the lawsuit Galbreath or his attorney has 20-days to respond to the allegations.
