Large fire heavily damages two homes

WINCHESTER, Ky. (WKYT) - Firefighters are trying to figure out the cause of a massive fire that destroyed two homes in central kentucky overnight.
The fire broke out a little before three this morning on College Street in downtown Winchester.

"We smelled smoke and we kind of talked about it and you could actually see smoke coming past one of the street lights," said witness Cody Wiley.

That's what a Winchester Police officer spotted, which prompted them to evacuate homes near the two that had already caught fire.

"It's so important that everyone of us go to bed with the right thoughts at night, let unnecessary issues go. Cause we never know if we're gonna wake up or what we're gonna wake up to," said neighbor Joel Wilson.

Fire crews from at least four different agencies responded to keep the flames from spreading.

"When we pull up at a fire and we have two structures burning, that pretty much taxes our manpower immediately. So we know that we need additional help from Lexington and Montgomery county and also from Clark county here," Batt. Chief Byron Schroedel with Winchester Fire said.

"The entire sky was just lit up. It was really sad, because I really wanted to buy this house," said neighbor Alexandria Elkins, gesturing toward the burned down vacant home.

Elkins, who lives across the street, adds she was relieved to hear the woman living in the house next to the one for sale was ok.

"I didn't think there was a fire, I didn't even think to look for her car to see if she was home. I thought that she was just burning fire wood," said Elkins.

Fire investigators are still on scene and have not released a cause to the fire.
