Laurel County officials share lessons learned after tornado

EAST BERNSTADT, Ky. (WKYT) - Laurel County continues to recover, one year after a deadly tornado outbreak.

People in Laurel County knew there was a strong chance a tornado would hit on March 2, 2012.

It did, killing six people, injuring dozens and destroying 56 homes.

The view from the air a day after the tornado hit is still fresh in the Judge-Executive's memory. He was in the Laurel County Emergency Operations Center. Eight people manned the phones, swamped with calls for help after the tornado hit. Laurel County leaders say that's one example of the changes they've made. Eight people is no longer enough during a disaster.

The community East Bernstadt has rebuilt homes and continues to offer support victims. A memorial service will be held Saturday at the First Baptist Church to marked the anniversary.
