LEXINGTON, Ky. - (WKYT) - His family says he's had a violent past and they are not surprised to hear he allegedly committed another violent act.

38-year-old Charles Bynum is now behind bars after allegedly attacking a woman who lived in his apartment building on Kees Road in Lexington.

Folks who live nearby say as temperatures rise, so does the crime rate in the area--which is why they weren’t surprised when learning about what happened Saturday.

“When the weather gets hotter, people start doing things that aren’t right,” said Tomika Banks, who is concerned about the crime in the area.

One of those “things” happened Saturday morning when Lexington police say Charles Bynum broke into his neighbor’s apartment by kicking in her front door.

Then, according to police, things quickly took a violent turn when Bynum allegedly pulled out a knife and stabbed her.

Bynum was living in the apartment building with his half-sister at the time that he allegedly committed the crime.

We spoke with his half-sister off camera and she told us that her brother occasionally hung out with the victim, but she has no idea what prompted him to commit such a violent act.

Charles Bynum is currently being held in the Fayette County Detention Center on charges of 2nd degree assault and 1st degree burglary.

The victim was taken to UK Hospital after the incident where she is listed in fair condition.
