Lexington man dies saving nephew on vacation

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) - A Lexington man has died while vacationing in South Carolina.

Family of 45-year-old John Palmer tells WKYT that he was caught in a rip current Sunday afternoon while swimming with his two nephews in the ocean at Isle of Palms, SC. Family members said the older nephew was able to swim to safety, but Palmer had to push his younger nephew out of the current. After that, they said, he was overpowered by the water and drowned.

His family says he was a strong swimmer and that they consider him a hero for saving his nephew's life. Palmer was born and raised in Lexington and was listed as the president of Lexington business H2Osmosis.
