LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) -- Americans everywhere are coming out in droves to support and honor the lives lost, as well as physical and emotional scars left by the Boston bombings.

This afternoon local Lexington runners took steps to let people know that in the wake of tragedy the "Boston Strong" message is spreading nationwide.

Organizers say they were stunned by this impromptu event--everyone who came out had Boston on their minds.

Keith Cunningham, the organizer said he was overwhelmed. "Tuesday When We started talking about this, we were thinking 30-40 runners. By Thursday, it was 100-150. We estimate over 300 today."

Gathering in front of the South Ashland Avenue John's Run/Walk Shop Store runners united ready to take every step they could to heal a community.

"Monday--everything fell apart. They attacked our community. Today, we just put it back together," said Cunningham.

"We just want to show our support for those people and let them know we are with them," Karen Allen, a runner.

Karen Allen and her daughter, Megan, drove to Lexington from Garrard County just to participate in the Run for Solidarity.

"We had to get up early--a lot earlier than usual!" said Allen.

They were among the many representing communities beyond Lexington. Organizers say some drove in from as far away as Louisville. They say they have a message for the folks responsible for the Boston tragedy, and a reminder for the running community.

"We run. We're going to run all the time. Not going to be ruled by fear," said Cunningham.
