Lexington student injured at school

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) A fifth grade student faces a painful recovery after her father says another student badly injured her thumb on purpose. Now he's angry because he claims the school isn't punishing the other student.

Fayette County school leaders confirm this incident happened at Deep Springs Elementary.

“This week is anti-bullying week at the school but on Monday we got a call that our daughter had been hurt at school,” said Bob Felts, whose daughter is injured.

Now, fifth grader Maddie Felts' metal splint on her thumb and bruised chest are signs that show something went wrong.

“I feel scared because I don't know what is going to happen next and next it could go even farther than what happened this time,” Maddie Felts says.

This time she says another fifth grader attacked her while they were working on a project. She says the other student dislocated her thumb and hit her several times.

“From what I understand the girl got a slap on the wrist because she was in school the next day,” Bob Felts tells us.

Maddie’s father says since the incident, teachers have moved Maddie so that she no longer sits near the student who allegedly hurt her but he says that's simply not enough.

Fayette County school officials confirm this incident happened but they cannot comment it since it involves specific students but they say they are working with the children’s families at the time.

Now Maddie's father plans to take matters into his own hands. “My next step is to press charges so that it doesn’t happen to anyone else’s child.”

As for Maddie, “I wanted to apologize because I know it might happen again and I don’t want tension between us.”

Fayette County school officials say they do not consider this incident a case of bullying.
