Man charged after nearly running over three officers

Police have charged a man with attempted murder after they say he nearly ran over three police officers.

23-year-old Johnnie Paul Smith is also charged with five counts of wanton endangerment for the incident near the Knox County Courthouse.

Barbourville police say two officers at a safety checkpoint had to dive out of Smith's path after he drove at them.

They tell us other officers fired their guns when smith tried to hit a third officer just beyond the checkpoint.

Police caught Smith after a short chase.
