Many questions still remain as to whether former police chief, Greg Reeves was fired or if he resigned from his position at the Georgetown Police Department.

Some residents in Georgetown told WKYT that they were surprised to hear that the long standing police chief was no longer employed by the city.

"He's been the police chief for a long time. It was very unexpected, so yeah it was just shocking to hear," says Melissa Golden, a Georgetown resident.

Reeves served as a police officer in Georgetown for more than twenty-five years. He has been the chief for the last eight years.

Mayor Everette Varney promoted Reeves to Chief of the Georgetown Police Department in 2004, "I would like to thank former police chief, Greg Reeves fr his many years of service to the city of Georgetown and wish him very well in any endeavor he may undertake in the future."

Varney adds,"I feel that the Georgetown Police Department needs to go in a different direction. As mayor of the City of Georgetown, it is my duty to make that change. And it my decision to make that change."

"I know him personally. I think he's a great man. And I hate it for his family," adds Golden.

Captain Scott Starnes and Captain Ronald Wagoner are now filling the leadership duties for the Georgetown Police Department until a new chief is named.

Mayor Varney tells 27 News First that the city is working to find a new police chief as soon as possible.
