McConnell says he's ready for 2014 challenges

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) - Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell says he's ready to take on any challengers as the five-term Kentucky Republican gets a head start on his re-election campaign next year.

McConnell opened a campaign office in Louisville on Saturday, about a year earlier than in his previous campaigns. McConnell faces the possibility of being squeezed by challenges from the right wing of his own party as well as from Democrats.

In a feisty speech to supporters, McConnell said he's ready to take the fight to anyone challenging him.

He said his re-election campaign looms as the only race with national significance in 2014 because of his Senate leadership job.

McConnell is known for a bare-knuckled campaign style and prolific fundraising. He started the 2014 election cycle with $7.4 million cash on hand.
