NE Ohio festival celebrates an American favorite

AKRON, Ohio (AP) - The National Hamburger Festival is under way this weekend in the Ohio city that was home to two brothers who claim they invented the hamburger.

The two-day festival in Akron includes a hamburger eating contest, crowning of the festival queen and police and firefighters competing in a burger cook-off.

City lore says brothers Frank and Charles Menches of Akron invented the hamburger at the New York State Fair in 1885.

Other cities also claim to be the home of the hamburger, but Akron Mayor Don Plusquellic wasn't having any of that in promoting the festival. Akron calls itself the "City of Invention" and the mayor says that includes the hamburger.

The mayor says a festival honoring beef on a bun is a great way to show off the city.
