National Parks, scenic areas to close if government shuts down

The Klauers are visiting southern Kentucky from their Arizona home.

Their trip Friday took them on the Big South Fork Scenic Railway…part of the National River and Recreation area.

But if the Federal Government shuts down….excursions to the historic Blue Herron Mining Camp..will stop.

“You know if people get the idea that it’s going to shut down, you can’t get the momentum of the tourists to come back here again,” said Bob Klauer.

“We’ve been told by the National Park Service, that if a budget is not met, we will go into shutdown mode,” said Becki Egnew, who helps coordinate activities on the Scenic Railway in Stearns, Ky.

Campgrounds will close and tourist traps will be sealed shut.

“If these federal areas are closed to the public, we’re going to have a lot of disappointed people,” said Egnew.

Absence of fun for some….but a loss of livelihood for others.

“Well it’s going to be terrible, because in this area, you wait until the beginning of April for business to pick up,” said Michelle Shook of Cutting Up Hair Salon.
