New rumble strips coming to Central Kentucky highways

FRANKLIN COUNTY, Ky. (WKYT) - The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet has announced the installation of rumble strips is scheduled to begin this week on five roadways in Central Kentucky.

A $500,000 contract awarded earlier this summer by the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet includes miles of new rumble strips installed along the centerlines or shoulders of highways in fourteen central Kentucky Counties.

The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet reports that the main cause of roadway departure crashes is driver drowsiness and inattention. Rumble strips are meant to rouse drivers attention when they stray from the travel lane and are also helpful in alerting drivers to lane limits where weather conditions can reduce driver visibility.

This week, The Department of Highways says motorists should watch for installation work in the following areas:

KY 44 in Bullitt County – from the Jefferson/Bullitt County line to Old Pitts Point Road (mile points 0.0 to 10.06)

US 127 in Franklin County – from KY 1900 to the Franklin/Owen County line (mile points 11.8 to 21.4)

KY 155 in Jefferson County – from KY 148 to New Hopewell Road (mile points 4.2 to 5.7)

Interstate 265 in Jefferson County – from mile points 30.0 to 35.0, shoulder rumble strips only

KY 155 in Spencer County – from KY 55 to the Jefferson/Spencer County line (mile points 0.0 to 4.2)

The Department of Highways will also be installing rumble strips on select roadways in Breckinridge, Grayson, Hardin, Hart, Larue, Marion, Meade, Nelson, Taylor and Washington counties.

Installation is usually a mobile operation with one-lane traffic controlled by flaggers. Motorists are asked to heed all warning signs and remain aware of workers in construction equipment when traveling.

The starting date and duration of work may be adjusted if inclement weather or other unforeseen delays occur. Dial 511 or log on to 511.ky.gov for the latest in traffic and travel information in the Commonwealth of Kentucky.
