Nicholas County schools reconsider "open door" policy

NICHOLAS COUNTY (WKYT) - A central Kentucky school district is making major security changes following Friday's tragic shooting in Connecticut.

Parents with students in Nicholas county will no longer be able to come and go from the district's buildings as they please.

"This morning we implemented a policy stopping parents form escorting children into the classroom," explains principal Shawn Parrish.

Parents will now have to drop their kids off at the front door and the teachers will take it from there.

In his 27 years of education, principal Shawn Parrish never thought it would come to this, but it has, and he says these days you have to be proactive.

"It's pitiful that we are at this point," says Parrish. "We are living at a time we can take these measures but they are necessary to keep our students and staff safe."

A letter sent home to parents outlines the changes, stating that only students and employees will be permitted in the building. The change also applies to times of special celebration, like birthdays and holiday parties. Some parents say its about time.

"After seeing what happened Friday in Connecticut, I believe the changes that a happening should have happened a long time ago," said Charity Knapp, a parent in the school district.

But while officials say the change is necessary, some parents see it differently.

"It's good but it's bad in a way," explains Lacey Waugh, a parent from the district, "It's not right my kids don't know what is going on and they don't understand why I was allowed to come and now I'm not."

Principle Parrish says the school will continue to improve security for other school activities, so people are where they need to be and not roaming the halls.
