PIKE COUNTY, Ky. (WKYT) - Billy Wilfong and his four children Dakota, Tyler, Cheyenne, and Emily died in Wednesday's fire in the Jonancy community of Pike County. The details on how the fire started comes as the community tries to cope with the tragedy.
Together, teachers and students set up makeshift memorials for 5-year-old Dakota and 4-year-old Tyler Wilfong Thursday morning. Dakota was a kindergarten student at Valley Elementary. Tyler was in Head Start there.
"He was a wild, rambunctious little boy, that's all you can say. He was a little boy. He loved his trucks," Belinda Bentley said of her student, Tyler.
Friends of Tyler and Dakota wrote letters to them, and were encouraged to talk about good memories.
"Dakota was funny. He was so funny. He was extremely active. You never knew where you were gonna find him," remembered teacher Norita Collins.
The boys died early Wednesday morning along with their siblings, 2-year-old Cheyenne, 6-month-old Emily, and their father Billy Wilfong. Fire investigators say the fire started in the living room where the family was sleeping. They found a space heater in that living room as well. They've determined the fire was accidental, but a cause has not yet been confirmed.
Funeral arrangements have not yet been set. The sole survivor of the fire, mother Tammy Tucker, is in serious condition at UK Hospital.
A fund for the family has been set up. Donations can be made at any Community Trust Bank.
