WILLIAMSBURG, Ky. (WKYT) - A recenty study of traffic along one of Williamsburg's busiest roads found a disturbing trend.

"It was unreal. People were driving 10 to 15 miles per hour over the limit," said Chief Wayne Bird, during a recent enforcement check of Main Street.

The limit is 25 miles per hour along Main Street, in between the University of the Cumberlands and the city school system.

"I got to noticing excessive speeds in those areas," said Chief Bird.

And police say they will accept no excuses, they will issue no warnings. And if you are caught going 10 miles over in a school zone, there is a good chance you will have to go to court over it, said Bird.

"If it is an area with flashing lights, the fine is double," said Bird.

Police also say they've worked 200 accidents in the past year, and in most of those crashes, speed was a factor.

"Speed is not something we aggressively get after, but after looking at these numbers, we are going to write for them," said Bird.

Police say they hope to use a $7,000 federal overtime grant to help pay for some of the increased enforcement.
