Police stress safety after bicyclist dies in wreck

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) - WKYT is learning more about a man who died after a car hit him Wednesday night.

Police say the car hit 41-year-old Jason Baines as he tried to cross Midland Avenue at Short Street Wednesday night. WKYT learned Baines worked for a Lexington bicycle shop.

41-year-old Jason Baines was an avid bicyclist. He worked at Lexington Bicycle Center, and had previously worked at another bike shop in town.

"So often we don't think about safety, especially with bicycles, until something tragic happens as with the situation," explained Sherelle Roberts with Lexington Police, "we just want to remind people that bicycles are vehicles as well. Bicyclists need to follow all of the rules of the road that includes stop lights, that includes crossing the street, that includes going with the flow of traffic."

Brown Funeral Home in Elizabethtown is handling all funeral arrangements. Baines leaves behind a fiance in Lexington.
