LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) - Police have released dispatch tapes from a crash that closed a busy Lexington road for more than 12 hours.

It has been nearly two weeks since Lexington police say a man was driving the wrong way on Richmond Road, hitting several cars.

The wreck happened overnight, backing up traffic most of that Friday, March 15.

It happened between Squires and Shoreside Drive on Richmond Road. Police believe the driver was impaired causing him to run into several cars head-on, including a semi truck.

And now police tell us they are working with prosecutors to take the next step in the case, filing charges.

We got our hands on the tapes from that morning of dispatch and officials communicating to get people on scene and close down parts of Richmond Road.

"I need a unit to shut down outbound Richmond and Squires," said one official. "The fire department is going to have one lane of inbound closed."

Several people involved in the crash had serious injuries. The driver police say caused the accident is still not being identified.

A call to Lexington police from a shell gas station attendant about a possible impaired driver matched the plates of the man officials say caused this accident.
