Police: Shooter takes aim at passing drivers

Updated: Wed 8:00 PM, Feb 22, 2012

Melinda Hammond says she couldn't figure out what had happened when her window shattered as she was driving last night.

"The window popped and the glass hit me in the face. I didn't really know what had happened at first. About the time it happened, a police officer was coming toward me. When we got out and looked it had been shot out," she says.

Nicholasville Police say two cars were hit near the intersection of North Central Avenue and East Oak Street about an hour apart last night. They say the shots could have had disastrous consequences.

"Had the glass exploded and hit the driver or if there had been passengers in the vehicle, they could have been injured from the glass, not to mention if the BB would have hit them. Also, the driver itself, being startled by what had happened could have had a collision hitting a pedestrian, so, again a very dangerous situation for everybody," says Officer Kevin Grimes.

People who live near the intersection say this isn't the first time they've heard gunshots nearby.

"Saturday night, I was dead asleep, but I woke up and heard gunshots. I got up and looked out the window to see if I could see anything, but I didn't see anybody. There were at least two or three shots," says Danny Deering, who lives on the corner.

Hammond says the violent encounter has pushed her to take action.

"They're going to start a neighborhood watch in here. They said they used to have one and they'd quit because everything had calmed down, but yeah, they're going to get it back together and I'll be right there," she says.

Police say if the shooter is caught, criminal mischief and wanton endangerment charges could be filed.
