LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) - It's a big day for incoming freshmen at the University of Kentucky, but a power outage Friday morning caused a few issues while they were moving in.

"I watched how we immediately exercised our plan to keep everybody safe," says Eli Capilouto, UK President. "We did all that. Do we're undaunted. It's an inconvenience but we're ready for those kinds of emergencies."

Just an hour into UK's biggest move in day, UK police reported a campus wide power outage. Kentucky Utilities reported around 3,000 customers on and around campus were without power.

Roselle Hall and Blazer Hall were the only two residence halls affected, but some people in other buildings on campus were stuck in elevators because of the outage. It also backed up traffic in areas around campus where traffic lights weren't working.

The outage wasn't what anyone would have wanted on move in day, but despite the snag in plans, students and parents were still excited.

"I'm interested in meeting new friends and going to these classes that I'm specifically interested in for my major and learning all these different team building skills and going into the adult world and leaning how to do that by myself," says Daria Smith, a freshman.

Power at both of the residence halls affected was restored within an hour.

Move in day lasts until 5:00 p.m.
