FLEMINSBURG, Ky. (AP) - A rail station in northeastern Kentucky has been torn down after failing to attain historic designation from the state and falling into disrepair.
Kentucky officials rejected the designation for Johnson Junction, originally build in Flemingsburg in the late 1800s and later replaced in 1910, after several months of deliberation.
Flemingsburg/Fleming County Economic Director Steve Donovan says by the end of 2011, the roof had started to cave in on the building and it became obvious the facility couldn't be salvaged.
Donovan told The Ledger Independent (http://bit.ly/QmB4hR ) that the county wanted to move the structure, but state officials replied that it would lose historical significance if moved.
The entire station isn't lost though. Donovan kept the ticket booth and plans to donate it to a museum or the city.
