LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) – Construction workers in hard hats have replaced kids with backpacks at Nicholasville Elementary School.

The Jessamine County School District pushed the start date back.

The Superintendent says heavy rains hampered efforts at work on sidewalks and asphalt.

The concern for Abigail Rieffe's mom is how they're going to make up the days.

"One time when they tried to make up days, they had to stay a half hour late, which is fine," said Rieffe. "But, not for the people out there that do work and they depend on the school."

As for how the kids feel... "I do want to go to school, but I don't want to go to school," said Blake Gill, a fourth grader at the school. "I do want to go, but at the same time, I don't want to."

So, he's a little torn between wanting to go back to school and not wanting the summer to end.

But, Abigail has enjoyed the extended summer.

"I'm shopping and swimming at Ms. Mary's pool," she said.

As for concerned moms like Sylvia, the district says the absences will be excused.

"Three days is three days. But, to elementary school students, it's not quite fair."

An open house is scheduled for Thursday, with classes starting Monday.

The newly-renovated school will include improved classrooms, an air-conditioned gymnasium and added parking.
