MOREHEAD, Ky. (WKYT) - The organizers for Morehead's Freedom Festival just haven't had the best luck. They were rained out Thursday, so they rescheduled. On Friday, more of the same wet weather has canceled the event again.
This was going to be the very first Morehead Freedom Fest.
"We'd been planning since the first of the year. We wanted to have bands. We wanted to do local booster clubs to raise money. And we wanted to have fireworks at the end to feature the new airport," says Joy Brown with the Morehead Tourism Commission.
Last year's fireworks show was canceled because it was just too dry. This year it was canceled again for the opposite reason.
"The weather. Mother Nature just doesn't play friendly with us. Last year, we had to cancel because of the burn ban. This year, we have a lot of water and we have to cancel again," says Brown.
The event was pushed back to Saturday, but it's still just too wet. Morehead Freedom Fest is now postponed indefinitely. Tourism officials hope to use the fireworks later this year.
"This was the best option rather than just blowing smoke and fireworks up in the air and the rain and everybody being miserable. This was a good option for us to just wait until fall. It's going to be hot in the fall just like July. We've got several activities coming up, the Morehead arts and eats festival and the air show coming up, so we may try to tie it in with those or maybe Labor Day."
Organizers said they won't be charged for any of the events they had to cancel.
Rowan County Emergency Management officials said last night's weather brought about four inches of rain to the area.
