This winter hasn't demanded much from road crews in the way of snow removal, so their supplies and resources are ample. Lexington's Streets and Roads division is prepared for the snow to arrive.
Snow plows and trucks are ready to hit the roads and ready to head out for tasks ahead.
Lexington's road crews already put down some pre-treatment, preparing for the next blast of winter.
"Thursday we started putting it down. The little white lines on the street that you see, that's our salt brine solution we use," says Albert Miller with Lexington's Streets and Roads.
As far as salt goes--they're topped off--and they have no concern of running out of needed materials.
"We have plenty of all our liquid products on hand. So, we're ready to go," Miller says.
Because this winter road crews have not spent nearly as much time preparing for and clearing snow as in past years, they tell WKYT the department is getting some housekeeping out of the way and spending more time on routine maintenance.
"Our winter maintenance routine is potholes. We do some tree removal and some parks areas and stuff," Miller says.
As workers prepare for the snow, they're also taking into account the below freezing temperatures expected over the weekend.
"We just add a liquid calcium chloride solution to the salt as we put it out, which allows it to be more effective in lower temperatures," says Miller.
Excess salt leftover will never go to waste. What isn't used can be stored, and Miller says the salt has a good shelf life.
Crews say they pay close attention to radars throughout the day, as a way to plan ahead and know just what to expect when the snow arrives.
