Because of the mild winter the area has seen so far, road crews in central Kentucky haven't had to worry about salt or snow plows that much, but this week has been different. They've been a lot busier, and Thursday night they were getting ready for more snow.
The trucks are fueled and ready to roll, and Scott County's Director of Roads Maintenance, J.R. Brandenburg is making sure his road crews get plenty of rest in anticipation of a busy night Friday. "When it snows, I got a great bunch of guys, and they'll kind of be expecting a phone call tomorrow night. We may not even go home according to what time it hits," Brandenburg said.
Compared to the supply problems encountered during last year's harsh winter, road crews will have plenty of salt
available thanks to a relatively mild season this year. "Last year was a killer," Brandenburg said, "This time last year
we had probably been out 20+ times, and this year I think I've spread salt three times so far."
That's been good for road crews in more ways than one. Brandenburg says anytime they run salt, hoses burst, and equipment gets damaged, but the warm winter this year has trucks in good shape, supplies strong, and budgets healthy. "I'd had to reorder salt this time last year. I still probably got 18- 19-hundred tons out there in the barn, which holds 2500 tons,” Brandenburg said, “Each time you fill it up, it's about $180,000, and it's just been a good year so far.”
