Roommate of man police shot tells what led up to tragedy

FRANKFORT, Ky. (WKYT) - The woman at the center of a deadly police shooting is speaking out.

Police say 57-year-old Gary Meadows held his roommate Jackie Johnson hostage in their home on Winding Way in Frankfort Sunday night. Officers shot him after they say he came out of the home and pointed a gun at them.

Johnson says she's just grateful to be alive. She had lived with Meadows at his home on Winding Way for about six months.

"That night was a night that I had never seen in Gary," described Johnson.

She says the fight Sunday night started because Meadows was jealous. He thought she let her ex-boyfriend visit.

"It was like he had snapped," she said, describing to WKYT how he pointed a gun at her, "he put it right between my eyes. I said 'Gary, we're too good of friends for it to end like this. And I know you don't want to do this.' And I kept talking to him, and I talked him down."

That's when Johnson says she ran into her bedroom, locked the door, and pushed a piece of furniture up against it to keep him away.

"I thought he was gonna kill me. Something in his eyes, and something in his voice, it just wasn't him."

Despite what happened Sunday night, Johnson says Meadows was her friend.

"He would help anybody, that is true about him, but I just don't know what happened to him that day."
