Several apartments evacuated after early morning fire in Richmond

RICHMOND, Ky. (WKYT) - Several people were forced out of their homes Friday after an early morning fire.

Firefighters responded to the call just after 4am on Keystone Drive, North of downtown Richmond.

Crews were quick to knock the fire down and they say it appears to have started in a vacant apartment. They believe the small fire may have been burning for over an hour before anyone noticed.

Officials say no one was injured but about 12 units were evacuated due to smoke damage. Many were allowed back inside their homes after about an hour.

Firefighters believe the fire started in the kitchen area of the vacant apartment.

Fire investigators were called to the scene.The cause of the fire is still under investigation but officials say they do believe it is suspicious.
