Sheriff says he wasn't alerted to escaped inmate

WILLIAMSBURG, Ky. (WKYT) - There's some disagreement in Whitley County as to who knew about an escaped inmate and when they knew it. The jailer says within a half-hour of an inmate walking off the job at the highway department on Monday, he'd notified sheriff's deputies and Kentucky State Police. The Sheriff says he didn't find out until last night and that creates a threat to public safety.

A call was made from the jail to dispatch around 1:00 Monday afternoon.

"One of our level ones working at the state garage has run off," the jail employee told the dispatcher.

Whitley County Sheriff Colan Harrell, though, says he was never alerted.

"I found out by accident last night. My wife and I went to a restaurant in Corbin and a friend of mine inquired about it," he said.

Sheriff Harrell called dispatch Tuesday night to ask about it. The answer was still unclear.

"This may sound crazy, but do we have an escapee running around here?" Harrell asks on the recording.

"I've been here since 7:00 and I haven't heard anything about it," replied the dispatcher.

Kentucky State Police said they didn't know anything about it either until the sheriff called them Wednesday morning. Jailer Ken Mobley, though, said his workers notified State Police and said there were sheriff's deputies at the jail when the escape happened, who were aware of the situation.

"I know they was aware. They was aware. They didn't tell the sheriff. I don't know why. He can take it up with his deputies," said Mobley.

Wherever the breakdown happened, Sheriff Harrell says it needs to be fixed in the future.

"We operate a professional sheriffs department. We expect everybody else to be professional," said Harrell.

Mobley said he believes Wynn is still in the area. He said Wynn was set to be released later this year.
