Sheriff's daughter indicted

JACKSON, Ky. (AP) - The daughter of the Breathitt County sheriff, who formerly worked in the sheriff's department, has been charged with forgery and abuse of public trust involving proceeds of checks made out to the agency.

A grand jury indicted 36-year-old Crystal Southwood on 28 counts of forgery and one count of abuse of public trust.

She will be arraigned on Feb. 24 in Breathitt County Circuit Court.

Attorney General Jack Conway announced the indictment Friday. His office investigated after a referral from the state auditor's office.

Southwood is the daughter of Sheriff Ray Clemons.

Conway's office says Southwood is accused of forging the endorsement on 26 checks in payment for serving subpoenas, one for a gun license and one for a calendar advertisement and diverting the money to her own use.
