Some small Ky. towns feel the negative effects of "Sizzurp"

CYNTHIANA, Ky. - (WKYT) - It’s supposed to be used to relieve coughing but some central Kentucky police departments say they're noticing a rise in the theft of a certain kind of cough syrup.

Police say the drug is being abused and some say the abuse is influenced by music.

"You hear the rappers and various other artists talking about this and they want to see what the buzz is about. They want to see what they can do to immulate them and get the feeling get high like they are," said Michael Ingram, owner of Hometown Pharmacy.

Central Kentucky towns like Cynthiana are feeling the negative effects of “Sizzurp”-- commonly known as cough syrup.

"They take this cough medicine. They put Jolly Ranchers in there or mix it with Mountain Dew and get a buzz from it," said Ingram.

Ingram’s store was recently broken into and the thief got away with three bottles of Promethezene with Codeine, which is also known as cough syrup.

Ingram’s store isn't the only pharmacy affected by the robbery.

On the same day Ingram’s store was broken into, Cynthiana police say there were two attempted break-ins down the road on US-27 in Paris at the CVS and Rite Aid.

Ingram says with a prescription you can get the cough medicine for about $10-$15 but he says it has a street value of $500 a bottle.

He says he's now aware of the popularity of the drug and has some advice for other pharmacists.

"Be aware of the changing culture be aware of what people are seeking. It’s hard to secure this stuff because, prior to this, I wasn't aware it wasn't a very sought after medicine."

Cynthiana Police say the thief who stole from Ingram’s store has not been caught and they don't have a good description of him.
